WE ARE THE CHANGE CHANGE

We believe that making a change starts at home. To make our future alive with girl power, we need to inspire our young girls with the fiercest belief in themselves today.

about change
A group of girls, most wearing matching pink shirts, stand together indoors holding decorated trays. They appear to be at an event or workshop, smiling and interacting with each other. The setting has a high, metal-beamed ceiling.
Two young women in pink shirts practice self-defense; one holds a padded shield while the other punches it. Several others in pink shirts are training in the background on blue mats.
Three females in martial arts uniforms stand side by side on a white background. It's all about change, as the adult has a black belt, the older child a red belt, and the younger child an orange belt. All are looking at each other and smiling.

It All Started

FROM THE HEART  HEART

Our founder, Theresa Stanley, has been teaching martial arts for almost 20 years. Having been a teen with low self esteem and massive body image issues, martial arts was a source of strength for her. Becoming an instructor came with the responsibility of mentoring and building confidence in her students.

In 2018, Theresa was inspired by the story of a fellow mom who was struggling to help her young daughter with her self esteem. Her 8 year old daughter was so low that she ‘didn’t want to live anymore’. At this moment, Theresa made a decision to get bigger than the walls of her taekwon-do studio. A burning flame ignited in her heart and the Girls on Fire movement began.

Since 2018, Girls on Fire has hosted 6 Conferences in Edmonton, 3 in Red Deer and 1 in Calgary along with numerous workshops, mentorship programs and team trainings. We continue to spread our message through our local programs and soon our digital app (Coming in 2026)

THE PILLARS OF GIRLS ON FIRE

Our programs are based on three foundational pillars.

Pink handwritten text reads I LOVE Myself on a black background. Below is a small flame graphic and the words Girls on Fire in orange and pink, sparking change and confidence in every girl who’s passionate about self-love.

MINDSET, MENTAL HEALTH & SELF LOVE

This pillar is all about the inside work. We believe that changing how girls think is a key factor in their confidence. Key Concepts Taught : I am statements noticing negative thoughts gratitude empathy finding support Busting through insecurities (the famous board-breaking exercise)

Pink handwritten text on a black background reads I Am Strong, embracing change. At the bottom, an orange and yellow flame graphic burns brightly with the words Girls on Fire in red below it.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Health and fitness is crucial to having a clear mind. Too often athletics get left behind when school or social lives get busy, however, being active is a crucial part to having high confidence! It's hard to feel good if you don't physically feel good! Key Concepts Taught: Relationships with food Conversations about body image Finding activities you love

Pink cursive text on a black background reads, She is beauty. She is grace. She will kick you in the face. Below is a flame logo and the words Girls on Fire—about the power to spark change.

SELF DEFENCE

Self Defence is one of the major ways we are different than any other confidence program. As a martial arts based program, we believe that it's extremely important that girls have training, even a small amount, in self defence. There is a lot of confidence to be had when you learn that you have the strength to defend yourself. Key Concepts Taught: Being Prepared Awareness Physical Defence
